Description
In this panel, the three speakers will discuss their emergent project looking at Ireland’s Housewife of the Year competition. Over the last year, they have been developing methodologies for engaging critically both with the competition itself and the wider context of women’s lives in mid-twentieth century Ireland. Combining interviews with the women participants and an examination of the archival record of the competition, including materials from the RTÉ archives and that of the magazine Women’s Way, their project will engage with the complex interplay of lived experience and media representation that the competition represents. Papers will illuminate the differing approaches that the project will take, based on the expertise of those involved, from social gerontology, performance historiography, and performance and media studies. The panel presents an opportunity to reflect on the complex histories of women’s domestic lives in Ireland in light of ongoing efforts to reform the Irish constitution relative to ‘women’s work’.
