Description
The Seamus Heaney Memorial Lecture Series annually honours the celebrated Northern Irish poet. Previous lectures have been given by some of the most respected scholars of Irish literature; Roy Foster, Declan Kiberd and Eve Patten for example. The series was begun by the Keough-Naughton Institute in the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, but this year became a partnership with the Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen’s University Belfast. In conjunction with the team at Notre Dame, QUB staff selected and invited a speaker and hosted the event in the brand new Seamus Heaney Centre. It was one of the first public events in the new building. Writer, poet and academic Seán Hewitt gave a lecture and about 80 people were in attendance. The lecture was fully booked out a week in advance and was given by writer, poet and academic (with Trinity College Dublin) Seán Hewitt. It was followed by a lively discussion with Seán, audience members and the host, Dr Garrett Carr of the Heaney Centre. “We look forward to working further with Notre Dame,” said Dr Carr, “helping to grow the Seamus Heaney Memorial Lecture Series into its second decade and beyond.”
