Description
This one-and-a-half-day workshop will explore the issue of social movements in deeply divided societies with a particular focus on non-sectarian movements. These are mobilizations that in some way cross-cut and/or challenge the ethno-national, sectarian status quo of politics and political institutions in these societies. They include but are not limited to movements based on citizenship, class, environment, gender, sexuality, public space and public services. The workshop will be interdisciplinary, featuring contributions from political science, sociology and anthropology, among other fields. It will explore a range of empirical case studies from different global regions, including Northern Ireland, Lebanon, Cyprus, Burundi, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Palestine and Israel. The workshop will address a number of core questions, including:
• What political opportunity structure do non-sectarian movements encounter in deeply divided societies?
• What strategies do they use to navigate this environment?
• How do they frame their goals in this context?
• To what extent can non-sectarian movements mount a broader challenge to their respective ethno-national political systems, advancing wider democratic reform or even transformation?
The workshop will be hosted by Villanova University, co-sponsored by the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies and the Center for Irish Studies, and in partnership with Queen’s University Belfast. It will conclude with a roundtable discussion open to students, faculty and members of the wider Villanova community.
