Taking the Stage to Professionally Engage

Activity: Participating in or organising an event typesParticipation in workshop, seminar, course

Description

Simulated learning is fast taking center stage,
in preparing healthcare professionals for
clinical practice. However, to get the most out
of simulation, students have to immerse fully
into different characters, so that the simulated
experience is as close to real life, as possible.
The Problem: is that, role play doesn’t come
naturally to any of us. We can feel nervous,
embarrassed or even distracted, because we
are conscious we are role playing and people are
watching us!

The Solution: to overcome this problem, we are
planning to build a mobile app, that introduces
midwifery students to the key principles of how to
role play. However, as the app is for our students,
we want some of you to be involved in its design.
Here’s how it will work:
• You will be part of a team of 11 students who
will attend the 1-day, design workshop
• First, you will enjoy an informal “how-to-roleplay” hands on session
• In the afternoon, you will be put into a small
team & together you will be able to design
what you think an app for other midwifery
students to learn about role play should be like
• Next, your team showcases your design to a
small panel (A Dragon’s Den approach for a bit
of fun!)
• Then, we take the winning design and build it;
while the winning team enjoys their prize!

We would like to thank the Queen’s Annual Fund, who have funded this design event.
