'The Nest' Construction

Description

In response to fragmented file management and communication practices within the midwifery education team, I led the design and development of The Nest, a SharePoint-based digital hub. Previously, the team’s workflows were dispersed across multiple formats, locations, and communication channels, creating challenges in areas such as onboarding, team meeting scheduling, and access to shared resources. Using a human-centred design approach with iterative feedback and prototyping, The Nest was created to centralise and standardise these essential functions. This digital space now serves as a cohesive, intuitive resource, providing team members with a single point of access for files, streamlined communications, and procedural guidelines.

Following human-centred design principles, I worked closely with the team to understand their needs, creating an environment that intuitively supports their daily tasks. The Nest simplifies file organisation and scheduling, enabling team members to quickly locate documents, follow standard processes, and stay informed on important updates. By integrating automation features—such as meeting reminders, notifications, and version-controlled document sharing—the platform also reduces administrative burdens and enhances collaboration, allowing the team to focus more on educational impact and less on administrative tasks.

This digital transformation project aligns strongly with Queen’s University Belfast’s Strategy 2030 and key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. By training midwifery staff to use and update the SharePoint hub, The Nest supports Employability 4.0 standards, building digital skills and confidence in managing online resources. This hands-on experience with The Nest enhances team members' digital capabilities, fosters collaboration, and contributes to sustainable, inclusive technological practices in line with institutional goals and global standards for digital literacy and efficiency.
