The sea turtles of Galapgos: keeping a good thing good (workshop)

Activity: Talk or presentation typesInvited talk

Description

The Galápagos Sea Turtle Conservation Workshop engaged university students in exploring the challenges of protecting sea turtles in the Galápagos, particularly the risks posed by boat collisions. The workshop introduced a data-driven approach to conservation, integrating boat traffic data (AIS tracking), drone-based sea turtle density estimates, and advanced biologging technologies such as CATSCams, which recorded sea turtle movement, soundscapes, and behavioural responses to vessel noise. Key findings highlighted that while turtles can evade boats traveling under two knots, collision risk increases significantly with vessel density—a factor that can be managed.

A stakeholder engagement exercise challenged students to develop strategies for reducing boat strikes without relying solely on punitive measures. Participants considered how conservation efforts must balance environmental protection with economic realities, encouraging voluntary compliance through initiatives like the Turtle Change Initiative, which partners with local tourism operators to promote sustainable practices.

The workshop reinforced the importance of adaptive management, transparent conservation strategies, and interdisciplinary collaboration, giving students hands-on experience in addressing real-world marine conservation challenges.
