Of This Brave Time by Jimmy Murphy A work in progress showing of a play based on Rebels: Voices from the Easter Rising by Fearghal McGarry Directed by David Horan “If after years, if years find us together, How we shall tell each other the old tale Of this brave time…” The Sentimentalist – Tomas Mac Donagh In 1947 the Bureau of Military History was established by the Irish government to record the experiences of those who took part in the fight for independence. In 1959, the results of this research – including 1,773 ‘witness statements’ – were placed in 83 steel boxes and locked into a strongroom in Government Buildings. In 2011, Fearghal McGarry compiled a selection of these statements into a compelling account of the Easter Rising. The Abbey Theatre has commissioned playwright Jimmy Murphy to dramatise a selection of these statements, concentrating on the experiences of those directly involved in the events of Easter 1916.
