Description
I completed the Traditional Chinese translation of all eight stories in the 2025 IEEE Women in Engineering (IEEE WIE) Manga series. The translated editions are publicly available through the IEEE WIE website, extending access to this educational resource for readers who use Traditional Chinese. The work involved careful linguistic and cultural adaptation rather than word-for-word translation. Across the eight stories, I sought to preserve the tone, context, character voices, technical meaning and narrative rhythm of the original stories, while communicating their engineering ideas clearly and naturally in Traditional Chinese.
The series introduces a diverse range of STEM subjects, including human-centred design in dental care, assistive robotics, solar energy and sustainability, artificial intelligence and computer vision, computational thinking, data-informed problem-solving, drones and communication technologies, and electronic packaging engineering. Rather than presenting engineering as a collection of abstract concepts, the stories explore these subjects through everyday situations, imaginative challenges and human-centred problem-solving.
This activity brings together my academic interests in electronic and electrical engineering, computing, computer science education and accessible educational communication. I was particularly pleased to translate Hurray for Electronic Packaging Engineers!, which introduces the engineering involved in protecting the technology contained within everyday electronic devices. This subject relates directly to an Electronic and Electrical Engineering module that I previously taught.
The project demonstrates how visual storytelling, analogy and cross-cultural translation can make complex STEM ideas more accessible and memorable for readers of different ages and backgrounds. It also supports IEEE WIE’s international educational outreach by making the Manga series available to a wider linguistic and cultural audience.
