Transboundary Cooperation in Areas of Undelimited Maritime Borders: Finding a Solution for Lough Foyle

Activity: Talk or presentation typesOral presentation

Description

The absence of legal agreement between the UK and Ireland over the maritime borders between Northern Ireland (UK) and the Republic of Ireland (RoI) have caused particular difficulty in effectively regulating developments related to the natural resources within and surrounding the two transboundary loughs, but particularly Lough Foyle on the north-west coast. Despite the transboundary jurisdiction of the Loughs Agency (LA), a creature of the 1998 Belfast Good Friday Agreement, uncertainties over ownership of the seabed within the Foyle have, for example, hindered developments in offshore wind energy and in the effective licensing of aquaculture within the lough itself.
