Description

A Global Review of Hospital Care and Support for Children and Young People with Intellectual Disabilities:

Children and young people (CYP) with intellectual disabilities (IDs) on admission to hospital continue to experience inequalities in communication, care coordination, and workforce readiness, leading to poor health outcomes. Families are often excluded from care decisions, but are still expected to provide care in hospital. Additionally, Registered Nurses (RNs), nursing students, and nurse educators report a lack of knowledge, skills and confidence when caring for this population.

Aim of review: To identify and synthesise global evidence on the views and experiences of families, RNs, nursing students, and nurse educators regarding the hospital care and support of CYP with IDs, with a focus on implications for child and family health outcomes.
