Description
The Watson-Atkins Schools poem competition on DNA/RNA was inaugurated to mark to 60th anniversary of the discovery of the structure of DNA. It was open to all secondary school students on the island of Ireland and primary school students in Co. Cork. The inaugural prizes were presented by Prof. James Watson (Nobel Laureate) at the unveiling ceremony of a new sculpture by Charles Jencks entitled "What is life" in the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, Dublin. The sculpture depicts the structure of DNA, RNA, ribosomes and proteins, and their associations through transcription and translation. I was the judge representing Northern Ireland for this competition.
