Workshop: Assessment: Values in, value out

Activity: Participating in or organising an event typesParticipation in workshop, seminar, course

Description

The aim of this workshop is to explore what we could do within our Psychology programmes to develop assessment practices and the wider student experience. The workshop will be semi-structured, and it’s hoped that it will be an open forum to discuss ideas for the development of programmes. In particular (for the UG programme), we are interesting in looking at the opportunities and challenges related to a move to programme-level assessment, but we will also discuss PG programme development too. It should be of interested to everyone, but particularly those with an interest in programme/module design, assessment, and student experience.

Facilitator, Dr Andy Grayson has provided the following outline of the workshop:

In this workshop I’d like us to explore a number of ideas from the morning’s keynote presentation in a little more detail, and work with you in thinking through how these ideas might apply in the local context of Psychology at QUB, which I’m keen to learn about. I’d like us to consider the ramifications of going all out for a radically subject/course driven approach to assessment strategy and practice, which in my view has implications for learning, teaching, assessing, and feedback-giving across the board. Getting collective ownership of endeavour and a collective buy-in to agreed sets of values (real ones, that we live and work in accordance with) has good consequences for us and for students. In fact, let’s delete that last clause and include the students in the ‘us’ bit (in as much as that is possible).
