History of Popular Entertainment

    Press/Media: Public Engagement Activities

I am a historical adviser and interviewee for a BBC 4 three-part documentary on the history of popular entertainment in Britain. My published research (especially the monograph 'Not Shakespeare', 2002) has helped to determine the program content. Additionally, I have supplied information and resources to the production team and will appear on camera to explain the varieties of popular entertainment in Victorian Britain. Additionally, I directed on camera a scene from a 19th-c Shakespeare burlesque.
