Prostate Cancer Fundraiser QUB: The Rossi

Members of the Rostrevor based Amateur sports team, The Rossi, have completed an all Island cycling challenge, covering 600km in three 3 days and raising in excess of £22k for research into Prostate Cancer.

 

Starting at the most southerly point of Mizen, Co Cork on Friday 30 June, the ten-strong team cycled to the most Northernly point of Malin, Co Donegal arriving  Sunday 2 before travelling home to Rostrevor Square where friends and family had gathered to applaud them. 

For brothers Martin & John McGinn it’s been a family affair.  The biking siblings and their eight Rossi team mates completed the challenge this weekend with Martin’s wife Julie, and the brothers’ parents - Martin Snr and Mona McGinn - at the helm of the support vehicles. 

To date the fundraising total has reached over £22,000. 

Martin McGinn says: “Like a lot of families, we, and a number of the members of the club, have had a family member who’s been affected by Prostate Cancer. We are tired but elated to have completed this mammoth 600km challenge and we are so grateful to everyone who has donated, thank you for all your support and your messages.”

Doctor Aidan Cole, Oncologist and Researcher with Queen University Belfast said that the research team are indebted to the Rossi for their support. 

“The Rossi have raised such as huge amount of money with this challenge. The money raised will fund laboratory research, clinicals trial and education about Prostate Cancer. Prostate Cancer has now overtaken Breast Cancer as leading cause of cancer death in the UK. Through the research in QUB, we are trying to make lives better for men, using this money raised locally to benefit men across Northern Ireland and fund further clinical research. We can’t thank all the members of the Rossi enough for the support that they have given our work.”
