Description

The work of Free Market was referred to in Brian Ward's chapter 'From Full Irish to FREESPACE' in the Routledge International Handbook of Irish Studies. This chapter examines Irish architecture during the Celtic Tiger boom years, the crash, and the eventual economic recovery. Using representations of Irish architecture such as the book, Full Irish, and the Architecture Biennale, FREESPACE, it concentrates on the architectural practices (such as Grafton Architects and O’Donnell + Tuomey) that were the focus of international interest during this period but places their work in the midst of the country’s broader spatial production. Using imagery of ghost estates, it also examines the emergence of a distinct post-Celtic Tiger mode of architecture evident in projects such as Commonage.
