Recent research conducted at Queen’s University Belfast in Ireland found that in addition to being recalcitrant to treatment, Klebsiella appear to have the capacity to cause more serious infections by counteracting the body’s defenses. The lead investigator of this study, Jose A. Bengoechea, PhD,director of the university’s Centre for Experimental Medicine, spoke with Infectious Disease News about the increasing threat of Klebsiella, the dearth of new antibiotics to address it, and the frightening possibility of a “post-antibiotic era.”
