EDITORIAL MARCH 2008
Welcome to the first issue of the Water and Environment Journal volume 22; the main peer-reviewed publication of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management.
The success of 2006 has continued throughout 2007 and the Journal has gone from strength to strength. The number of submissions continues to grow along with a marked increase in the quality of papers. Readership has increased internationally with submissions received from over 35 countries. We have managed to continue this growth while maintaining high standards by thorough peer review and a very competitive average number of days from submission to first decision. In line with this continued success, the Editorial Board has been expanded and includes six new members. I would like to welcome the new members and look forward to their contribution over the coming years. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the hard work of all involved at Blackwell Publishing, CIWEM, the Editorial Board and our external reviewers.
As part of the on-going development of the Journal the Editorial Board has decided to award an annual prize to the author of the best paper. Criteria considered for selection of best paper include: timeliness and interest in the topic, quality of the written submission and originality of the work. We are pleased to announce that the winners of the 2007 award are Sally Reid, Pauline Mackinnon and Trevor Elliot for their paper ‘Direct measurements of reaeration rates using noble gas tracers in the River Lagan, Northern Ireland’. Their paper can be found in issue 3 volume 21. Congratulations to the authors!
A new feature for 2008 is the introduction of discussion articles into the Journal. We would welcome short responses to and comments on published papers. Authors will be given the opportunity to reply to these. To submit a discussion article please see the Guidance Notes for Authors on the CIWEM website www.ciwem.org.
My main goal for the Journal is that by publishing the best papers in the field from around the world, we will continue to sustain and support the excellence of those who manage and protect the environment. In order for this to succeed we need your help. We welcome the submission of papers from a broad range of topics including air pollution, waste management and environmental conservation. To submit a paper, please follow the instructions provided on the inside cover.
I would also like to invite further applications for external reviewers for the Journal. This is a great opportunity to be involved in the work of the Institution and be the first to read exciting new research. We welcome applications from anyone with suitable expertise in a subject within the scope of water and environmental management. If you are interested, please email your CV to the address below.
Best wishes for 2008!
