This is a bibliography of Magee’s publications for the period 1735-1789. It is data generated during the course of my PhD: James Magee (1707-1797) and the Belfast Print Trade, 1771-1781.
Those publications that are preceded by a question mark indicate those titles where there is some doubt if Magee printed them. This is mainly confined to those works whose titles have been uncovered by Belfast News-Letter advertisements. These advertisements indicate Magee as having ‘published’ works but there is ambiguity over the usage of the term and it is far from clear whether Magee ‘published’ such works in the sense of simply selling them, or that he was involved in the printing arrangements and/or pecuniary arrangements for the text’s sale/retail. Also, all works whose dating is uncertain or approximate are placed at the end of Magee’s bibliography in a section entitled “Bibliography of works printed by Magee with approximate dating”.
This data will be of value to book-trade historians, eighteenth-century scholars and those researching the history of Belfast in this period. Since each title has core bibliographic information, as well as price and if it is a first-time printing or reprint, a lot of information can be mined from this regarding cultural, social and political life of Belfast in the eighteenth century.
