Past, present and future: connecting communities with shared histories

Impact: Cultural Impact, Societial Impact

Narrative

Beginning with the previously-unseen photographs of Janet Mendelsohn, taken in an infamous red light district during a period of rapid social change, this project connects diverse communities to Mendelsohn's work and in the process works to challenge stereotypes around sex workers, immigrants and other inhabitants of the post-war inner city. Through impacts arising from collaborations with art galleries, film festivals and photography groups, the project encourages members of the public to share their own stories through photography and other mediums, thus contributing to a more meaningful public understanding of issues including immigration, urban change, sex work and poverty.
