Research Statement

Alberto Longo is Interim Deputy Head of School and professor in Agri-food and Environmental Economics and in the School of Biological Sciences.

Alberto has a PhD and a BSc in Economics from the University Ca' Foscari of Venice, Italy.

Before joining Queen’s in 2005, he held research positions in environmental economics at the University of Bath (2004-2005), and Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (2000-2004).

 

RESEARCH FOCUS

Alberto is an applied economist with main interests in environment, energy, health, food, and human behaviour. He is particularly interested in cost-benefit analysis and non-market valuation. His work has appeared in Journal of Health Economics, Social Science & Medicine, Land Economics, Environmental and Resource Economics, Energy Economics, Ecological Economics, Journal of Environmental Management. He is particularly interested in microeconometrics, households' choices, methodological issues in non-market valuation and nudges for behaviour change.

He is currently involved in Groundswell on valuing the health benefits of urban green and blue spaces, FAN on the role of behavioural economics in antimicrobial resistance, Re-livestock on farmers' willingness to embrace innovations to adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change, and the UK Hub for One Health Systems: Creating Sustainable Health and Social Care Pathways

Previous projects include:

- SeaGas, on using seaweed (kelp) for anaerobic digestion, 

- the Centre of Excellence for Public Health NI 

- ALICE tto study the links between energy and wastewater treatment facilities,  

- two projects funded by the UK Energy Research Centre on marine energy governance and on the role of ageing and gender in households' energy decisions,  

- FoodPath on the role of behavioural economics methods to reduce food waste.

He holds a visiting position at the Basque Centre for Climate Change, BC3, Bilbao, Spain.

He has advised several organizations, including the World Bank, UNEP, the Minister of the Environment of the Basque Country, Northern Ireland Energy Networks.

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

 

Alberto is interested in exploring how behaviour change methods can be used to mitigate environmental and public health problems. His recent work has looked at food choices and physical activity, how green infrastructure can facilittate the increase in physical activity, and how information and other nudges can influence behaviour change. He has advised several organizations in the use of nudges for behaviour change, including the European Commission, the Basque Government, NIE Networks.

Alberto is also interested in methodological issues in applying stated and revealed preferences methods for valuing environmental goods and services.

TEACHING and ADMINISTRATION

Alberto co-ordinates and teaches on the module BIO1102 Environmental Management where he introduces students to major environmental problems, such as climate change, energy production, air pollution, waste management, protecting biodiversity, food production  - exploring environmental, social and economic perspectives when addressing these problems. He also contributes lectures to the MSc Leadership for Sustainable Development and MSc Ecological Management and Conservation Biology.

Previously, he was the Director of Education for Postgraduate Taught Studies in the School of Biological Sciences (2017 - 2025), and the course director for BSc Environmental Management (with Professional Studies) (2008 - 2025).
