Research Statement

In my PhD research I aim to study and map the characteristics of historic shopping streets that form their cultural heritage. While the cultural heritage of historic urban landscapes has been extensively studied in recent years, shopping streets have not been the primary focus of this research. In contrast, the few authors whose urban design and ethnographic perspectives have focused on streets ad their function as public spaces, show little interest on heritage values. This research project seeks to address this dissociation, using the Historic Urban Landscape Approach (adopted by UNESCO in 2011) as its theoretical framework.
