Particulars

Barbara is Director of Institute of Professional Legal Studies.  She is a qualified solicitor and has held a judicial appointment as Chair of the Northern Ireland Valuation Tribunal since 2007.  She has an extensive international network in skills based competitions.  She gained an MEd in 2021.  She has held a part time academic post at IPLS since 2001 until her appointment as Interim Director in 2017.  

Achievements

Leadership and Management:  Barbara has provided strategic academic leadership to achieve the implementation of the most significant developments at IPLS since its inception.  She provided the academic framework and research for the Review into the future of vocational education at IPLS chaired by Madam Justice McBride in 2018.  In implementing the recommendations of this review she created an innovative curriculum which is coherent, comprehensive, complies with the requirements of the professional bodies and which reflects the needs of legal practice in the 21st century to produce practice ready trainees.  Her innovation and practice are research based.  Such a dynamic change in the delivery of the curriculum and assessment has significant implications for staffing/resourcing.  She introduced the innovative use of senior tutors.
