Research Interests

               My current, primary research interest and work is the fundamental study of the unique physics and chemistry of atmospheric pressure non-thermal plasmas and of plasmas created in liquids. This involves the  use of a wide range of electrical and optical diagnostics and of computer simulation and modelling. These plasma systems have many exciting potential applications and I am engaged in multi-disciplinary research into their use in areas such as medicine, nanoscience, catalysis and the environment.

            I also continue with my initial research interests in low temperature plasmas.  This is primarily rf driven and electronegative plasmas of the type used in semiconductor processing. My initial esearch career was in atomic collision physics, working on experimental ion-molecule collisions before an intense period working on novel phenomena in multi-charged ion-atom collisions.

            I have published more than150 articles in international refereed journals and over 250 conference proceedings and abstracts.  I have been invited to make presentations at most of the international conferences in my field.

Teaching

            I enjoy University teaching. I have initiated, taught, examined and coordinated a wide variety of Physics courses at all levels both UG and PG

            In 2001 a colleague and I started to conceive and design a distance-based PG course in Plasma and Vacuum Technology, aimed at those working in the microelectronics industry, which launched the next year.

            In 2007 I initiated and lead of the design and implementation of another remote learning MSc in Plasma Physics and directed at those wishing seeking research degrees in this area.
