Research Statement
Bróna McNeill is a PhD candidate in the School of Law. Broadly speaking, her current research is concerned with both property law and environmental law. More specifically, her work is focussed on the relationship that exists between land ownership and nature conservation in Northern Ireland. Bróna's interest lies primarily in the way in which we conceptualise property rights in natural resources, and the impact that this might have on nature conservation efforts.
Bróna has also developed a keen interest in the agricultural system of conacre, having conducted extensive research specifically into this esoteric component of Irish land law. Bróna presented an introductory paper on conacre at the 2019 Association of Law, Property and Society annual meeting in Syracuse University, New York. She is due to present a more focussed paper on the subject entitled, 'Is The Grass Always Greener? Understanding Grazing and Cropping Licences in Northern Ireland,' at the 2020 Modern Studies in Property Law conference in Northumbria University.
Bróna's research is such that it has also led to a deep interest in agricultural law, and the property dynamics that occur within 'the rural space'. Bróna is due to present a paper entitled, 'Deconstructing Agricultural Landholding in Northern Ireland: Keeping Land Useful or Keeping it in the Family?' at the 2020 Association of Law, Property and Society annual meeting in Tulane University, New Orleans.
