Research Interests

Research interests

My research interests lie broadly in the area of school ethos and intergroup relations in schools. I have undertaken research on the concept of school ethos attempting to develop greater conceptual clarity and specificity.  I have also published extensively on the role of schools in promoting or impeding the development of more positive relations between groups divided by religious belief, political persuasion and or cultural traditions; I am currently involved in exploring the potential of the relatively recent concept of ‘shared education’ on the development of better inter-group relations in Northern Ireland and other divided societies.. I would welcome inquiries from prospective doctoral students who are interested in undertaking research in the field of education in divided contexts.

I am currently the Deputy Director of the Centre for Shared Education within the School of Education and the Director of Education in the School of Education; I teach two modules on the Professional Doctoral Programme: Education in Divided Societies and Qualitative research modules.
