Personal profile

Research Statement

I graduated from Queen's University Belfast in 2009 with a BSc Psychology (First Class Honours), and later in 2013 with a PhD awarded by the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences. My thesis was entitled 'The health status and health service utilisation of cancer survivors with late effects' undertaken at the Centre for Public Health. This project using mixed methods to understand the health status, unmet needs and pattern of health service use by individuals affected by cancer who self-identified as experiencing long-lasting effects as a result of cancer and its treatment.

Building upon my PhD, I was awarded a Health and Social Care Research and Development Office (HSC R&D) Fellowship to undertake training and a Cochrane review entitled 'Non-pharmacological interventions for cognitive impairment due to systemic cancer treatment'. This work led onto securing an Enabling Research Award from the HSC R&D Office to work alongside stakeholders, patients, carers and clinicians to develop and test the feasibility of an intervention targeting cancer-related cognitive changes.

Currently, I am working on the MONARCH study funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Technology Assessment (HTA) programme which is exploring home monitoring for patients with age-related macular degeneration. My role is to undertake a qualitative study to assess the acceptability of monitoring of eye changes at home by patients and their caregivers, as well as, leading Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) throughout the study. I am also working on the qualitative evaluation of the CHALLENGE UK trial funded by Cancer Research UK. This trial forms part of an international randomised control trial evaluating exercise following treatment for colon cancer on three-year disease-free survival.  Other notable current projects include: i) Cochrane review of psychosocial interventions for informal cancer caregivers and, ii) Methods of inspection in the regulation of health and social care alongside the NI Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority (RQIA).
