Personal profile

Research Statement

My research aims are to monitor worldwide the increasing incidence of type 1 diabetes in childhood and to identify environmental risk factors which, if modifiable, could provide opportunities for the prevention of this disease.

I maintain the Northern Ireland Childhood Diabetes Register and am a co-ordinator of the EURODIAB collaboration of childhood diabetes registers. I have produced estimates for the number of children with type 1 diabetes worldwide for three editions of the International Diabetes Federation's Diabetes Atlas. I was a leader of the successful EURODIAB Substudy 2 case-control study of risk factors for childhood type 1 diabetes which, at the time it was conducted, was the largest such study of this disease and which identified many of its known environmental risk factors. Since then I have published several systematic reviews of early life risk factors for this disease.

I have provided statistical support for both case-control and family-based genetic epidemiology studies within the School. This work has resulted in collaborations with the GRID study and the MIGen Consortium into the genetics of type 1 diabetes and coronary disease, respectively, and these collaborations have lead to co-authorship of several publications in journals with the highest impact factors.

I have organised trial management and performed statistical analysis for several multicentre randomised controlled trials which have been lead by local investigators (CUROSURF4, OSECT, DAPIT).
