Research Interests

Research interests include philosophy of education, social justice, education, inclusion, special educational needs, equality and disability.

I am currently involved in two research projects. The first focuses on how young people with a learning disability and/or autism may be harmed in their capacity as a knower through, or because of, the relationships education they received (or did not receive) throughout their school based education. I will draw heavily on Miranda Fricker's account of Epistemic Injustice to frame my arguments and analysis.

The research approach is participatory and will recruit a small group of young people with a learning disability and/or autism as co-researchers. Once the young people have completed an inclusive research skills programme they will design, implement and disseminate the research. I have taken this approach to ensure maximum participation from the young people whom this issue impacts the most.

The second is a partnership between Queen's University Belfast, APEFE a.s.b.l. (a Belgian NGO) and Bethlehem Arab Society for Rehabilitation (BASR). This research will evaluate special educational assessment and follow up support offered in BASR. The findings will be used to inform the development of a new, more inclusive assessment tool and follow up materials.
