Dr Christopher J Lockhart MB BAO BCh (Hons) MD FRCP FESC

Dr Lockhart represents Ireland on the European Working Group for Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) and was a scientific doument contributer for the 2020 ESC guidelines for ACHD. He is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology.
As the regional lead for ACHD within the Belfast Trust, he is responsible for inpatient management and assessment, peri-operative advice and management, acute admissions and Trans-esophageal echo in patients with congenital heart disease. He has developed a transition programme for children from paediatric cardiology to the adult department and also co-ordinates the specialist ACHD Multi-disciplinary Team meeting with surgical and interventional and paediatric colleagues. Other interests include heart disease and pregnancy, and the management of pulmonary hypertension associated with congenital heart disease.
Dr Lockhart's clinical research interests include the long term follow up of adults with congenital heart disease, specifically Tetralogy of Fallot and those having undergone atrial redirection surgery. More recently he has developed a program with x 2 funded PhD students evaluating novel biomarkers, bio-phenotyping and cellular senescence in complex congenital heart disease- aiming to discover molecular pathways of disease and potential therapeutic targets.
Current funding is from the Heart Trust Fund, the Belfast Trust Research Charitable Funds and BraveHeartsNI. Other applications are currently in process with NI Chest, Heart and Stroke and the British Heart Foundation.
Dr Lockhart is reponsible for the cardiology curriculum in the centre for medical education. He coordinates the 3rd year cardio-simulation program wth colleagues from CESC; and arranges the 3rd year online lectures and tutorials. He leads the final year tutorials in cardiolgy in the Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH), and also coordinates the final year tutorials. He supervises the FY0 work shadowing program in the Coronary Care Unit in the RVH.
