Research Statement

My PhD research is on children's burial grounds (cillíní/killeens). My main research focus is on mapping all of the recorded cillíní on the island of Ireland, with case studies in Antrim, Fermanagh, and Meath.  During my research, I will record more cillíní through community engagement in County Fermanagh; analyse the Ordinance Survey (OS) maps to find evidence of unrecorded cillíní in Fermanagh, Meath and Antrim through map labelling and supplementary document provided by Northern Ireland's Site and Monuments Record and the Republic of Ireland's National Monuments Record; and will research the socio-religious influences that may have helped Ireland's cillíní form from the late medieval into the early modern period, with a focus on the religious influences of Franciscans on the west coast and the Jesuits on the east coast.
