She holds a PhD in Law from Queen's University Belfast, where she was an AHRC Northern Bridge Consortium scholar, as well as an LLM in Law, focusing on Human Rights and Criminology, and a law degree from Universidad del Rosario in Colombia.

She has completed a doctoral placement at Colombia's Special Jurisdiction for Peace and co-authored amicus curiae briefs for the International Criminal Court and the Office of Public Counsel for Victims. Dr. Suárez Vargas has also contributed policy and consultation briefs to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Truth, Justice, Reparation, and Guarantees of Non-Recurrence, the Northern Ireland Department of Justice, and the Colombian Ministry of Justice.
