Research Focus

Dr. Daniela Suárez Vargas is a Colombian lawyer and postdoctoral fellow at Queen's University Belfast, specialising in victimhood, sexual and gender-based violence, and transitional justice in conflict settings.

She holds a PhD in Law from Queen's University Belfast, where she was an AHRC Northern Bridge Consortium scholar, as well as an LLM in Law, focusing on Human Rights and Criminology, and a law degree from Universidad del Rosario in Colombia.

Currently, Dr. Suárez Vargas is leading the ESRC-funded project The Subversive Victim: Victimhood, Agency & Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in Colombian Non-State Armed Groups, as part of the prestigious ESRC Postdoctoral Fellowship (NINE DTP). Her research interrogates the politics of victimhood within Colombia's transitional justice framework, with a particular focus on sexual and gender-based violence within guerrilla and paramilitary groups.

In addition to her academic work, Dr. Suárez Vargas has extensive experience as a lawyer and researcher in international criminal law, human rights, international humanitarian law, and the UN Women, Peace and Security Agenda. She has completed a doctoral placement at Colombia's Special Jurisdiction for Peace and co-authored amicus curiae briefs for the International Criminal Court and the Office of Public Counsel for Victims. Dr. Suárez Vargas has also contributed policy and consultation briefs to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Truth, Justice, Reparation, and Guarantees of Non-Recurrence, the Northern Ireland Department of Justice, and the Colombian Ministry of Justice.

Teaching

Dr. Daniela Suárez Vargas has served as a Teaching Assistant for the Contract Law module in the undergraduate law programme at Queen's University Belfast.

In addition, she has been invited as a guest lecturer to deliver lectures on international criminal law, human rights law, transitional justice, and Latin American politics across both undergraduate and postgraduate modules at Queen's University Belfast, Ulster University, and Universidad del Rosario.
