Research Interests

I am researching autistic experiences of intimacy and sexuality. Following the results of an initial exploratory survey in which almost 600 autistic adults indicated their sexual and gender identities as well as their research priorities in the area of sexuality, my research is now concentrated on the intersection of sensory experience with intimacy and sexuality, and the opportunities and challenges experienced by autistic people in their intimate lives.  My approach rejects an a priori assumption of deficit or deviance, be it neuorological or sexual.  Rather, to paraphrase David Halperin, I consider autistic experience as a valid position from which knowledge can be created.

Various frameworks including critical autism studies, symbolic interactionism, and queer theory inform my thinking, and a commitment to consultative research guides my methods.
