Personal profile

Interests

As a Professor of Practice in Management and former business leader, I work with external organisations who are interested in collaborating with Queen's Management School.  We appreciate opportunities for our students to conduct projects which deliver tangible benefits to client organisations, and we welcome the chance to work alongside practising managers in the classroom.

My teaching combines relevant theory with current insights into the challenges faced by businesses and other organisations, to enhance our students' employability and to offer executive-course participants new perspectives on their own experience.

As a qualified Executive Coach, I work with senior executives and entrepreneurs to help them address current challenges and realise their full potential.

Research Interests

My professional background includes both business leadership and academic research and teaching. My PhD was completed while I was leading internationally-focused SMEs.  It considered the relative competitive advantages of family-owned firms in West Germany and England, and the extent to which historic values and practices are still influential today.

My research interests are in leadership, particularly in adverse conditions, and the management of small- and medium-sized enterprises, especially family firms.  In all of these areas I am interested in both historic and current issues.

I am currently researching the development of leadership and management skills at the supervisory level as well as among executives.

I would like to collaborate with companies in research that addresses current business challenges, through creating case studies for management teaching or writing for academic and practitioner audiences.

My book, Family Firms in Postwar Britain and Germany: Competing Approaches to Business (Boydell Press, 2023) is the first book-length comparative study of Mittelstand businesses in Germany and SMEs in the UK. I examine the business ecosystems in each country, analyse the management and culture of six companies in detailed case studies, and argue that the Mittelstand model can guide business leaders pursuing Purpose in the 2020s.
