Personal profile

Research Statement

I work chiefly on comparative approaches to the study of film, especially how the documentary relates to wider visual and social histories. A number of my research projects have been externally funded (British Academy (2013-15), Wellcome Trust (2015-16), Leverhulme Research Fellowship Scheme (2013-14), and the AHRC (2017-22)), and to date I have successfully supervised twelve PhD projects, and second-supervised six.

My publications include: Documentary Film and Radical Psychiatry (Palgrave Macmillan, 2024); Regarding the Real: Cinema, Documentary, and the Visual Arts (Manchester University Press, 2016); and Post-Conflict Performance, Film and Visual Arts: Cities of Memory (co-edited, Palgrave Macmillan, 2016). I have published research articles in journals such as Film Quarterly, Screen, Quarterly Review of Film and Video, Studies in Documentary Film, Kinema, Screening the PastModernist Cultures, Journal of Culture and Aesthetics, Film Studies, and Literature-Film Quarterly. Recent publications include: 'Tableaux New-Yorkaise: Translation and the Task of the Documentary Filmmaker,' Writing Forward: Translation, Performance, Creativity, eds. Susan Bassnett and Piotr Blumczynski (London: Routledge, 2025).
