Research Focus

Dr. Ethan Shattock is a lecturer in law.

Research Interests

Ethan’s research sits at the intersection of law, technology, and human rights. His specialist area of expertise  on the law around online misinformation. His broader work examines issues related to online freedom of expression, the regulation of harmful content, and the right to free and fair elections.

Ethan’s research has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals such as Common Market Law Review, Human Rights Law Review, Northern Ireland Legal Quarterly, and the Harvard Kennedy School Misinformation Review. His work has also been featured in a range of blogs including the European Law Blog and the European Journal of International Law (EJIL Talk!) blog.

Ethan has been featured on media outlets such as RTE, Euronews, and Newstalk. He has also acted as an expert advisor to the European Commission and UNESCO in a consultancy capacity.

Teaching

Ethan has taught extensively on a range of both core and specialist elective modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has taught EU law, Equity and Trusts, Contract Law, Legal Methods and Skills, and Constitutional Law. Since joining the QUB School of Law, Ethan has acted as the module convenor for the Mlaw Contract Law module.

In January 2025, Ethan designed and launched Europe’s first ever postgraduate module dedicated to the law of misinformation. He currently convenes this module.

Particulars

Ethan is the Disability Advisor for the School of Law. He is a member of the Private and Commercial Law thematic group as well as the Global Intellectual Property Law and Technology (G-IPTECH) Centre at the QUB School of Law.
