Research Focus

Faris is a lecturer in  Construction Project Management at the School of Natural and Built Environment, Queen’s University Belfast (QUB).

I have received my PhD in 2020 from the University of Portsmouth. PhD is entitled ‘An Automated IPD Cost Management System: BIM And Blockchain-Based Solution’. The outcome of my PhD is two cost management systems. The first one is a centralised cost management system for IPD approach (CCMS4IPD), this system includes (1) cost estimation tool relies on Activity Based Costing (ABC), (2) developing an innovative cost budget method for IPD approach that enables parties to identify their Estimated Minimum/Maximum Cash inflow at the buyout stage to enable them to make the right decision, (3) developing an innovative risk/reward sharing method based on Earned Value Management and ABC to enable sharing risk/reward fairly among IPD core team members, (4) developing a visualisation tool to enable tracking the project cost graphically (EVM-grid). In addition, interactive web design is developed to enable all parties to check the project status regardless of their geographical zone. Meanwhile, the second system is a decentralised tool using Blockchain to enable tracking and recording the project cost values immutably to enhance the trust among IPD core team members.

In addition to having a PhD in Construction Management and BIM, I have also been awarded Master of Science in Construction Project Management with Distinction and best full-time student award from the University of Portsmouth in 2017. Moreover, I have a professional degree in project management (PRMG) from the American University in Cairo (AUC).

I have been practising the role of module coordinator for undergraduate and postgraduate courses. My role is to ensure that modules are effectively organised and delivered, as well as, ensuring that effective feedback on assessed student work is returned in a timely way.

Over the last three year, I have been engaged in supervising and co-supervising many postgraduate and undergraduate research projects in the fields related to BIM and Industry 4.0.

I have carried out extensive research in the field of BIM, Artificial Intelligence, cost optimisation/automation, and decentralised systems (i.e. Blockchain and smart contracts).

The scope of my current and future research focuses on utilising advanced ICT (i.e. Blockchain, artificial intelligence and big data) to automate different tasks in construction/cost management within the AEC industry.

Throughout the last three years, I have collaborated with several researchers, nationally and internationally (i.e. University of Montreal-Canada,  Deakin University-Australia, Western Sydney University, University of Waterloo) in which resulted in journal and conference publications.

I am an active reviewer at many top journals in the field of construction management and BIM (i.e. ECAM and Construction Innovation).

In addition to my academic experience, I also have industry experience, I was working for two years as a site engineer and site manager. I was responsible to manage a refurbishment of a hospital for a period of eight months, and the budget was $ 15 million. In addition, I have practised the quantity surveying roles for two years, including cost estimations for all construction elements, as well as preparing the tender documentation.
