Dr Gabriel Sánchez Espinosa is a Reader in Spanish Studies at the School of Arts, English and Languages. He graduated in Filología Hispánica at the Universidad Complutense and did his PhD at the Universität Duisburg, where he also worked as Lektor for Spanish.

In the period 2003-16 I held the following administrative roles in the School of Modern Languages:

  • Advisor of Studies in Spanish Studies (September 2003-January 2008, Semester 2 2013-14, and Semester 1 2014-15)
  • Level 3 (Final Year) Spanish Coordinator (September 2003 to July 2014)
  • Placement officer and Erasmus Coordinator for Spain-Latin America (September 2003 to January 2019)
  • Ethics and VA/C Officer (February 2010-January 2016)
  • Chair of the School of Modern Languages Ethics and Risk Committee (September 2011 to January 2016)
  • Acting Chair of the School of Modern Languages PG Committee (January-July 2012-13).
  • Acting Subject Lead in my area (Sem. 1 2011-12, August 2015 to July 2016).

My main leadership roles in AEL since 2016 have been:

  • Subject Lead in Spanish and Portuguese Studies (September 2016-January 2019),
  • Core Disciplinary Research Group (CDRG) Lead for Modern Languages (August 2019-August 2022).
  • I am currently PGR lead for Modern Languages (since January 2023)

Research Statement

Dr Sánchez Espinosa’s main research interests focus on the literature and culture of the Spanish Enlightenment, with special attention to book history and the circulation of ideas between Spain and Europe. He is currently working on a book on the printer-bookseller Gabriel de Sancha (1746-1820).

Teaching

Dr Gabriel Sánchez Espinosa has supervised to succesful completion a range of PhD and MRes projects on 18th-century topics. He welcomes doctoral applications from suitably-qualified candidates working on projects relating to Spanish 18th-century Literature and Culture, the Spanish Enlightenment and Spanish Book History. He has also supervised PhD and MRes dissertations on projects relating to the cultural reception of the Spanish Civil War, and contemporary memoirs and diaries. He teaches Spanish language and culture at all levels of UG study.

Dr Sánchez Espinosa is a member of the Instituto Feijoo de Estudios del Siglo XVIII, the Sociedad Española del Siglo XVIII, and the Centre for Eighteenth Century Studies at QUB.
