Personal profile

Research Interests

Gillian is a Lecturer of Criminology in  the School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work, where she convenes the module 'Punishment, penal policy and prisons' and co-facilitates the 'Learning Together' project in Hydebank Wood Secure College.

Her Research Fellowship in the School of Law critically examined the institutional reform of the Northern Ireland Prison Service, locating the change programme within the broader context of devolution and the political economy. Gillian's PhD used original empirical research to examine the gendered experience of custodial remand using a critical feminist perspective. She explores the criminalisation of marginalised women and the harms of imprisonment they endure.

More broadly Gillian's research interests include the political economy of imprisonment, the harms of criminal justice and court decision-making. In addition, with a background in the third-sector, she is interested in the penal voluntary sector and its implementation.
