Research Focus
Giulia is a 2nd year PhD student in animal behaviour at Queen's University Belfast whose main goal is to study, understand and divulge knowledge about ethology. She is deeply interested in the fields of animal behaviour and evolution, with a particular interest in mammalian research. Her research currently focuses on parent-offspring conflict between fallow deer does and fawns at Phoenix Park (Dublin) and how hormones, the weather, fat reserves and age affect the aggression rates of mothers towards their young.
Achievements
Academic English workshop series: completed QUB’s workshop series focusing on academic English provided by Queen’s University to support international students
R workshop series: completed statistics courses focusing on the basics of R and R Studio (R as a calculator, how to access help pages, scalars and vectors, random variables, characters and factors, how to create plots and outputting graphs, how to carry out t-tests and ANOVAs, correlations and regressions and the basis of statistical modelling)
I need it STAT statistics course: completed the course focusing on basic statistics, SPSS syntax, MS Excel basics, upset charts in R, study designs and MS Excel IFs and LOOKUPs
SEED and PLANTS training courses: completed the two courses focusing on Statistics, Ethics and Experimental Design (SEED) and PLanning ANd Transferable Skills (PLANTS)
Nature masterclass: completed the “Creating Successful Research Posters” and “Data Analysis Planning and Preparing” classes
Santander Open Academy: completed the “Excel -From basics to intermediate” course
Interests
BTO bird ringer trainee with a T license and organiser of autumn ringing programs in Mullaghglass.
BES (British Ecological Society) and AWRN (Animal Welfare Research Network) member.
Subscribed to LIPU’s magazine ‘Ali’ and interested in the fields of evolution, animal behaviour and conservation.
An active member of the Queen’s University Belfast Marine Biology and Zoology society.

BIO2140 demonstrator
- Demonstrated three histochemistry laboratory practicals focussing on cell staining, light microscopy, blood groups and osmotic fragility.
BIO1310 demonstrator
- Demonstrated a laboratory practical on basic microbiological techniques including diluting, plating and streaking microorganisms.
BIO1309 demonstrator
- Demonstrated on two field and laboratory sessions on ecological survey techniques and insect species classification.

- Demonstrated the laboratory practical “Genetics and the Molecular Toolbox” on CRISPR technique.
