Research Statement

Dr. Zhou's research specialisation is pattern recognition and image analysis. This is an interdisciplinary research area that draws his experience and training onto image understanding, robotics/intelligent systems and data mining. Image analysis has been continuously applied in the fields as diverse as visual surveillance, medicine, robotics and human-computer interface. The aim is to develop algorithms/systems that enable effective and efficient image segmentation, object detection and tracking, 3-D reconstruction and event search and retrieval. His research to date has focused on the development of machine learning algorithms that allow a system to better describe images while representing/inferring structures. His research has been or is supported by UK EPSRC, EU ICT, Royal Society, Innovate UK, Leverhumle Trust, Puffin Trust, Invest NI and industry.

Huiyu Zhou obtained a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Radio Technology from Huazhong University of Science and Technology of China, and a Master of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering from University of Dundee of United Kingdom, respectively. He was then awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Computer Vision from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, United Kingdom. 

Dr. Zhou is currently leading the Biomedical Image Processing Lab at Queen's University of Belfast. He has published widely in the field. He was the recipient of "CVIU 2012 Most Cited Paper Award", "ICPRAM 2016 Best Paper Award in the Area of Applications" and was shortlisted for "ICPRAM 2017 Best Student Paper Award" and "MBEC 2006 Nightingale Prize". He currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Recent Advances in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Human-Machine Systems and is on the Editorial Boards of several refereed journals. He is a Guest Co-Editor of IEEE Communications Magazine, J. of Skin Cancer, Pattern Recognition, Neurocomputing, Signal Processing, Signal, Image and Video Processing, Scientific World Journal and Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering.   

Dr. Zhou has been an external examiner for PhD candidates from several universities of UK and India. He is a reviewer of research grant proposals for RCUK, EPSRC, NEAT and RSE. He is one of the Technical Committee of "Information Assurance & Intelligent Multimedia-Mobile Communications in IEEE SMC Society", "Biometrics Task Force" and "Robotics Task Force" of the Intelligent Systems Applications Technical Committee, IEEE Computational Intelligence Society. His group webpage: http://sites.google.com/site/huiyujoe/.
