Research Focus

I am a PhD candidate in Politics at Queen's University Belfast. I previously completed my LLB in Law with Politics at Queen's and my LLM in Law at Trinity College Dublin. My PhD thesis focuses on elections in Northern Ireland since 1973, particularly those which use the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system. It examines the changes in local, Assembly and European elections for each of the major political parties in order to understand why these changes have taken place, and in the specific context of Northern Ireland it assesses whether STV is the most suitable voting system for encouraging support for moderate political parties in deeply divided societies. My broader interests include elections, voting systems and political parties, particularly in the UK and Ireland.
