I am researching Irish anti-communism in the years 1917 - 1939. Despite Ireland's negligible number of communists, it had a strong anti-communist movement in the inter-war years. My project aims to understand why this was so. I want to understand the role anti-communism played in Irish political life, as well as the function it performed for those who undertook it. I also study the background and potential motivations of Ireland’s anti-communists.
My goal is to place Irish anti-communism in an international context. Recent research has highlighted the international element in the right-wing reaction to communism. I want to trace the international influences on Irish anti-communism, and understand Irish anti-communism as one example of an international phenomenon.
