Personal profile

Research Interests

I am  Dean of Graduate Studies in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and Professor of Education in the School of Social Sciences Education and Social Work.  My areas of research expertise are in the social constructions and consequences of tests, examinations and assessment practices, especially their interaction with gender and their impact on children and young people.  I have extensive experience in conducting educational research projects with schools, colleges, examination bodies and policy agencies for a range of funders (academic, government and charities). I have worked with Head Teachers, staff and students, LEA advisors and governing bodies across all UK jurisdictions (England, NI, Wales and Scotland) as well as similar bodies in Ireland. I am  currently working with a European consortium of teacher agencies and ministries of education investigating the policy implementation of digital formative assessment in secondary classrooms in 5 European jurisdictions (Estonia, Finland, Greece, Spain and Portugal).  I am currently President of the Association of Educational Assessment Europe (2018-2020) as well as an Elected Fellow and an executive editor of Assessment in Education: Principles, Policy and Practice published by Taylor and Francis.
