I am Professor of Education in the School of Social Sciences Education and Social Work.  From 2018-2025 I was Dean of Graduate Studies in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS).  My areas of research expertise are in the social constructions and consequences of tests, examinations and assessment practices, especially their interaction with gender and their impact on children and young people.  I have extensive experience in conducting educational research projects with schools, colleges, examination bodies and policy agencies for a range of funders (academic, government and charities). I have worked with Head Teachers, staff and students, local education authority advisors and governing bodies across all UK jurisdictions (England, NI, Wales and Scotland) as well as similar bodies in Ireland. Between 2018-2023 I worked with a European consortium of teacher agencies and ministries of education investigating the policy implementation of digital formative assessment in secondary classrooms in 5 European jurisdictions (Estonia, Finland, Greece, Spain and Portugal).  From 2018-2020 I was President of the Association of Educational Assessment Europe (2018-2020) and am an Elected Fellow of AEA-Europe.  From 2009-2024 I was an executive editor of Assessment in Education: Principles, Policy and Practice published by Taylor and Francis. 

My teaching is in the areas of educational assessment, testing and examinations as well as assessment policy and student voice in relation to curriculum and assessment.  I also teach research methods relating to education and social science research.  I teach at masters and doctoral levels.
