Research Focus

My main research interests include end of life and bereavement.

I completed my undergraduate studies in Psychology at QUB and PhD in Nursing at Ulster University. My PhD was an interpretative qualitative study exploring the psychosocial challenges and needs of families when a parent is at end of life with cancer and the subsequent immediate bereavement period that follows. Following a systematic review, four sample groups were involved in this study, comprising of 79 participants. This included parents at end of life, bereaved parents, health and social care professionals and funeral directors. The findings of this research have been published in Palliative Medicine, Psycho-oncology, Supportive Care in Cancer, Patient Education and Counselling and Death Studies. Alongisde colleagues at King's College London, a resource was developed and is hosted by Marie Curie.

I have held post-doctoral research posts in the Department of Psychiatry,  University of Oxford and School of Social Work and Social Policy, University of Strathclyde. Projects have included:

- A co-produced qualitative inquiry exploring experiences of bereavement by suicide in later life (aged 60+) through the lens of bereaved older adults and health and social care professionals.

- A qualitative study exploring how we talk about thoughts of suicide and self-harm in later life (70+) through the lens of lay older people.

- Exploration of bereaved relatives' and health and social care professionals' end of life experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in the first two studies published in this area on an international level (2021).

- Exploration of young parents' experiences of pregnancy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Currently, I am working on a Marie Curie funded project exploring experiences of loneliness among people with a terminal illness and their carers. I am also a GEMS nursing student within the school.
