Dr Silversides is a practicing intensivist and anaesthetist, whose research interests span critical care and perioperative medicine. He has a particular interest in the effects of fluid therapy in sepsis and other critical illnesses, and is involved in experimental medicine studies and clinical trials in this area. Within perioperative medicine, his focus is on clinical trials to investigate the impact of anaesthesia-related interventions on longer term patient-centred outcomes.
Dr Silversides is chief investigator for SINFONIA (https://warwick.ac.uk/sinfonia), an NIHR HTA-funded 2500-patient trial comparing sugammadex with neostigmine for prevention of post-operative pulmonary complications. He is also leading an intervention arm studying conservative fluid management and deresuscitation within SepTIC (https://septictrial.co.uk/), an NIHR HTA-funded trial investigating multiple interventions in critically ill patients with sepsis.
Dr Silversides is keen to supervise and mentor fellows, students and healthcare professionals who are interested in improving patient care through research.
Dr Silversides contributes to the 'Acute Care and Emergencies' module for Yr3/4 medical students, the MSc Advanced Practice in Critical Care programme run by the School of Nursing and Midwifery, and to case-based learning for Yr 1/2 medical students.
He is module co-ordinatior for SCM8188, a short course in 'Clinical Trials: from protocol to patient' - https://www.qub.ac.uk/schools/mdbs/Study/PostgraduateTaught/short-courses/courses/ClinicalTrials-fromProtocoltoPatient.html and for a student-selected component in 'Intensive Care Medicine' MED3012.
Dr Silversides is also involved in postgraduate teaching and training for intensive care and anaesthesia, and is supervisor for clinical research fellowships in Belfast Health and Social Care Trust.
Dr Silversides works clinically as an intensivist at the Royal Victoria and Belfast City Hospitals, and as an anaesthetist mainly for major upper gastrointestinal surgery (mainly oesophagectomy and gastrectomy) at Belfast City Hospital. He is also clinical lead for critical care and perioperative medicine within the Northern Ireland Clinical Research Network (NICRN).
