Research Interests

Dr McGuigan is a Chartered Psychologist with specialised interest in research methods, data analysis and interpretation. Her work to date has involved projects concerned with diabetes self-management, structured diabetes education, self-directed care, mental health, child protection, respiratory care pathways and palliative care. She has completed commissioned reports and programme evaluations for various agencies including Diabetes Network, Western Health and Social Care Trust, Public Health Agency, NSPCC, Ulster University, Hospice, Integrated Care Partnerships and the Alcohol Education Research Council. She sits on various Advisory Boards related to End of Life Care and Child and Maternal wellbeing. Karen was also part of the team who developed one of the first industry-driven degree programmes in Ireland, following on from her work on the development of vocational qualifications informing industry standards.

She is currently working with Professor David Thompson and Dr Chantal Ski from the School of Nursing & Midwifery exploring the impact of interventions aimed at improving cardiovascular health and general wellbeing within the Northern Ireland population.

  • External Authenticator with Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI)
  • Co-Developer of BBS in Retail Management Practice
  • Co-Author of Further Education and Training Awards Council (now QQI) module descriptors for nationally and internationally recognized qualifications at various levels within the National Framework of Qualifications
