Research Statement

Dr Kent's research focuses on novel technologies for treatment and assessment of children and adults with physical disabilities, particularly cystic fibrosis and cerebral palsy, and the use of data analytics to evaluate healthcare.

Dr Kent currently works with Dr Claire Kerr (School of Nursing and Midwifery) and Connected Health Innovation Centre (CHIC; School of Computing, Ulster University).  The project involves the development of a digital toolkit for the assessment of physical activity in children with cerebral palsy and evaluation of mobility devices in this population. 

Dr Kent is also working with Dr Kelly-Ann Eastwood (Centre for Public Health, QUB) on data linkage studies exploring maternal BMI as a predictor of cerebral palsy in children, geographical spread of maternal BMI throughout Northern Ireland, and longitudinal changes in BMI in Northern Ireland.

Her doctoral research evaluated the LifeShirt in children and adults with cystic fibrosis.  The LifeShirt is an ambulatory system which integrates data from respiratory inductive plethysmography, electrocardiography, accelerometry, pulse oximetry and cough microphone. 

Dr Kent has worked as a research coordinator within the Northern Ireland Clinical Research Network in Respiratory Health.  Previously she coordinated the European Cystic Fibrosis Society Clinical Trial Network Standardisation Committee.  The ECFS-CTN Standardisation Committee evaluates novel endpoints for clinical trials in cystic fibrosis and develops standardised methods for their use in global multicentre trials.

Dr Kent is currently undertaking an MSc in Data Analytics in the School of Maths and Physics, QUB (due for completion Sept 2020).
