Personal profile

Louise Carson graduated in 2006 with a Master of Pharmacy degree (1st Class Honours) from Queen's University Belfast, and completed her pre-registration training in community pharmacy.  In 2007 she returned to the School of Pharmacy to undertake a PhD in the area of medical device related infection and bacterial virulence.  She completed her PhD in January 2011, and following an industry-funded postdoctoral fellowship, was appointed to a lectureship in Pharmaceutical Science in August 2012.

Dr Carson is a member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Research Interests

Dr Carson's research addresses issues associated with the use of implantable medical devices (such as catheters, joint prosthesis, pacemakers, implantable biosensors).  Complications associated with such devices may include infection and biofilm formation, inflammation, and the foreign body response that occurs as the body attempts to isolate the implant from surrounding tissues. When these complications occur they can result in device failure, increased patient morbidity, and increased burden on healthcare finances and resources.

Dr Carson's focus is developing materials that mimic the surrounding tissue, in order to prevent such complications, and promote healing following device implantation.
