Research Focus

My research focuses on responses to the work of Gustave Flaubert, particularly those coming from Jean-Paul Sartre and Pierre Bourdieu. I have completed an MRes project in which I provided a Bourdieu-inspired reading of Flaubert's Bouvard et Pécuchet. I am now engaged in a PhD project funded by Northern Bridge. The project is provisionally titled 'Tentatively Total: Re-Evaluating Flaubert after Sartre, Bourdieu and the Digital Turn', and seeks to reconcille Bourdieu and Sartre's readings of Flaubert, and to make use of Digital Humanities technologies unavailable to them to continue their largely unseen discussion to provide a fresh approach to Flaubert's life, context and work.
